JH Rose boys golf team wins 3A State Championship
GREENVILLE, N.C. — Junius H. Rose High School golf team is setting records, by being the first in JH Rose history and in Greenville to ever make it to a 3A State Championship.
These young men certainly proved they were a force to be reckoned with by winning the 3A title
in May at Pinehurst number 6 by 17 strokes, leaving their coaches Liz Barbee and Stephen
West extremely proud.
Rampants coach Stephen West attributes the boys’ success to the hard work and dedication the
team put in during the pandemic. “The guys started playing daily without any other distractions
because golf was the only sport available during covid.”
Though most of the golfers had played before the pandemic in junior leagues, as at early as age
7, a few Rampants only began playing in 2020.
The JH Rose team consists of 13 golfers separated into two teams. Team A plays in all
conference games while Team B plays in non-conference games.
The 2021-2022 Team A for the Rampants consisted of senior Cameron Hardison, sophomores
Luke Mosley and Will Gidrey, freshmen Lake Williams and Jack West. After winning the state
championship in May the young men headed back to Pinehurst to the high school National
Championship in July.
The coaches rented a house for the boys during the nationals and were so thankful they could
have more time bonding as a team. The group were able to have meals together, play ping
pong ball, watch movies and relax.
Coach West explained, “Through the help of the parents and few big donors contributing, the
kids were able to have this great experience in Pinehurst.” The golf team also held a fundraiser
to help contribute to the $6000 needed to make it to the nationals.
The Rampants boys’ team will enter the 2022-2023 season as record breaking golfers for not
only JH Rose but for the city of Greenville.
