A changing of the guard at Highland Park
DALLAS, Texas — Highland Park Athletic Director Johnny Ringo will retire at the end of June. Coach Ringo joined HPISD (Highland Park Independent School District) as the athletic director in June 2013. During the last nine years the Scots have won 19 team state titles, 40 individual state titles and have had numerous other teams finish as state finalists/semi-finalists and individual athletes medal at state competitions. Highland Park won the UIL鈥檚 Lone Star Cup in 2016-17, 2018-19 and in 2020-21, the top award in the state for high schools based on team performance in district and state championships. The Scots have now won 12 Lone Star Cups, more than any other high school in Texas.
Thanks to the 2015 bond election and Coach Ringo鈥檚 leadership, the district鈥檚 athletic facilities have received substantial upgrades. In addition to a new Seay Tennis Center and natatorium, the district has added a new gymnastics center, a weight room, new locker rooms and a new indoor golf facility.
Replacing Coach Ringo is Rodney Webb. Coach Webb has 32 years of high school coaching experience and 19 years of experience as either an Athletic Director or Campus Athletics Coordinator.
This past year, in just his second season there, he coached Denton Guyer鈥檚 football team all the way to the Class 6A State Final. Coach Webb served as the President of the Texas High School Coaches鈥� Association from 2018-2021, a position previously held by retiring AD Johnny Ringo and legendary coach Randy Allen. Currently, he is a member of the Texas High School Coaches鈥� Educational Foundation Board of Directors and has experience with the UIL Legislative Council, State Executive Committee, and Waiver Committee. He has led football teams to the state semifinals four different times and is a six-time recipient of District Coach of the Year honors.
