Jackson softball HC Laura Cheyney leads by example
JACKSON, Ohio —聽Laura Cheyney is in her second year as head coach for Jackson Varsity softball and was the varsity assistant coach for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. She also coached middle school and JV basketball at Jackson and middle school cross country during her coaching career.
Laura is a 2010 Jackson graduate, where she played softball for four years and continued playing in college at Otterbein University.
Her dad inspired her to play from a young age. “Softball was ‘our thing’ that we bonded over. We spent many hours practicing, playing, and watching the sport, and it developed into a lifelong passion.”
Coaching has taught Laura to ‘Practice what she preaches.’ In addition, she says, “…coaching makes me hold myself to an even higher standard because to be a true leader, you have to lead by example”.
Laura says the most memorable moment as a team was last year when they beat Perry in their regular season play. “We didn’t know at the time how memorable that would be; however, Perry went on to win states that year making that win even more special.”
One of the things she is most proud of is the incredible role models that the high school girls are to the youth girls as they teach them at their clinics.
Laura shared this quote with a message of advice for her team: “The moment you give up is the moment you let someone else win.” – Kobe Bryant
