Colts Neck HS track star Lilly Shapiro continues to impress
COLTS NECK, N.J.聽— Lilly Shapiro continues to amaze the world of High School Track. Lilly has had an unbelievable season and proudly wears her Colts Neck High School uniform as she tackles new accomplishments.
Before the season even began, Lily was spotted out by her coaches and was set up for a successful future. 鈥淲e were anticipating her having a long season, so we didn’t enter her in any races until the Group III State Relays on January 16th,鈥 says Coach Kevin Hein.
In the State Relays, Colts Neck won the Distance Medley Relay and the 4 x 800 with Lilly running as the anchor leg in both of those relays. The team earned 2nd in all of Group 3. Coaches and Lilly decided to not have her run again until she would compete in the Millrose Games. At this meet, she ran a Freehold District Record in the mile (4:51.04), which placed her in 7th. After this performance, Lilly then ran up at Boston University at the David Hemery invite where she competed against college and elite athletes. She ran an all time second best time in New Jersey and a Shore Conference record (4:45.39). Lilly then ran the next day at the NYC Armory. Coach Hein explains that this type of back-to-back running usually doesn鈥檛 occur but she needed a qualifying time in the 800 for the State Sectional Meet. Even with a rigorous schedule, Lilly set a new Freehold District Record and ran a 2:10.11.
Lilly then began her three rounds in 鈥淪tates.鈥 On February 19th, she competed at the Central Jersey Champs; Group III Champs took place on February 26th and the Meet of Champions was on March 5th. Lilly made her coaches, family, friends and teammates proud with an impressive win in the 800 and 1600 in all three meets. These incredible wins put her as the first girl in New Jersey history to win both the 800 and 1600 at the Meet of Champions. On March 1st, the CNHS girls Distance Medley Relay ran at the Eastern States Championships. They placed at an impressive 2nd place with a fourth best time in New Jersey History. It was Lilly who once again came out and amazed with an insane split of 4:43.65. Her season ended at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. Lilly anchored the distance medley to a 4th place finish and the CNHS girls earned the distinction of All-American.
Lilly Shapiro will be attending North Carolina Chapel Hill in the Fall. Her four year track career at Colts Neck High School is filled with many impressive accomplishments. This young runner鈥檚 future is just getting started. Congratulations Lilly on all of your hard work!
