Greyson Roberts laying the groundwork for boys volleyball program at Hough HS
CORNELIUS, N.C. — When Greyson Roberts, coach of boys volleyball at Hough High School, was a Junior at Zionsville Community High School in Indiana (2014-2015), he left behind his years of baseball and decided to try out a new sport and began playing volleyball.
Greyson explains, 鈥淰olleyball is an extremely fun sport, yet the vast majority of schools in the US only have a program for girls. When I was hired at Hough, I saw that there was no volleyball program for boys, so I sought to try and start one.鈥�
While speaking with Coach Sandi Skidmore, Greyson realized there seemed to be a great deal of interest from students. Between the Varsity and JV teams, there are 26 players. As a first-year teacher, taking on the responsibility of becoming a head coach of a new school sport was certainly a daunting task, however, it was also immensely rewarding.
鈥淲e鈥檝e been practicing since early February, with a season running mid-March through mid-May. Introducing most of these students to playing volleyball for the first time has been a fun challenge and watching them get better has been an amazing experience. From where we began to where we are now鈥e look like an entirely different team!鈥�
With such positive players and leaders, Coach Greyson has set forth the groundwork and has built a wonderful culture around this program at Hough High School. He is well on his way to achieving his goal of growing boys volleyball throughout the state of North Carolina.
