Yorba Linda HS football has the perfect regular season
YORBA LINDA, Calif. — This past football season marks another amazing victory for the Yorba Linda Mustangs. Playing in one of the most competitive leagues in Orange County, their undefeated regular season was a huge triumph in itself. This is their second undefeated regular season in school history.
During the season, two of their wins in the league came down to the very end. Their 30-27 victory against Foothill High School started with a last-minute drive to win, then scoring with less than 20 seconds left in the game. In their 28-27 victory against Villa Park High School, their opponent scored with 8 seconds to go and went for a 2-point conversion to beat them. But Yorba Linda High School stopped them and won the game.
Historically the Mustangs have been a running team, but this season they also showed their impressive throwing skills. Players that were a vital part of the team鈥檚 success this year were Reyn Beal (QB), Chase Jones (WR), JJ Conrad (WR), and Garrett Gonzalez (WR). These four players collectively broke every team record and career record made so far and were in the top of the county all year statistically.
Being a successful team takes both extreme commitment and hard work, but also takes highly dedicated players and coaches to motivate and lead their team. Wyatt Mosier (LB), Ryan Winners (DL), William Payne (DL), and Chase Jones (WR) are the ultimate examples of team leaders. As the team captains, their positive attitudes set the tone for the rest of the team. They each led by example and always gave it their best. In fact, one of the team鈥檚 core values is not just being a team but being a family.
Jeff Bailey has been coaching football for 29 years and has been the head coach at Yorba Linda High School since it opened 13 years ago. He believes the biggest strengths and keys to their success as a program is how they develop their players. The main component of this is their weight training. They teach Olympic lifting, which they believe is the best way to help their players reach their fullest potential as athletes. Coach Bailey says, 鈥淚 hope I will be remembered as a coach who has created a football program that has helped develop disciplined, hard-working, and successful men.鈥�
He also notes that his success would not be possible without the talented coaches that are on his staff: Richi Burrell, Jon Aed, John Domen, Gary Bowers, Tommy Storing, Steve Bowers, Fred DePalma, Steve Ditolla, and Augie Orapeza. Together with his coaching staff, Coach Bailey states, 鈥淚 truly feel that what we do has a tremendous impact on our players鈥� lives.鈥� For this reason, he tries to treat his players the same way he treats his own kids. He鈥檚 tough on them but loves them to death.
Each year, the goal for every upcoming season is to win the Battle of the Boulevard: rival Esperanza, Crestview League Championship, and winning CIF Championship. Since the opening of Yorba Linda High School in 2009, the Mustangs have earned 4 League Championships: Empire League 2011-13 and Crestview League 2019-21 and 1 CIF Championship: Division 8 Champion 2016.
