Q&A with Mamaroneck HS baseball captain George Povemba
MAMARONECK, N.Y. — Mamaroneck Baseball has had great success on and off the field for decades and has always held a special place in the Larchmont/Mamaroneck community鈥檚 heart. Many of these young players have been playing on baseball fields together since their elementary school days. The coaching staff is top notch and as the team looks towards the season ahead, they do so with great excitement. We caught up with Mamaroneck High School (MHS) baseball Captain, George Povemba to find out more about this season.
After coming off such a strong season last year, what are your hopes for this year’s team?
George Povemba: This year we lost a lot of great players, but we still have a great group of guys. Most of us have been playing with each other for our entire lives and have created strong bonds because of it. This comradery along with hard work should set us up for a successful playoff run.
What are your personal and team goals for the season?
Povemba: My goal is to play to my best ability by locking down the outfield and making things happen when I鈥檓 at bat. If the rest of the team and I can each play our part, then there is a chance we can achieve our goal to win the league and section championship.
What will you miss most about MHS baseball?
Povemba: I will most miss the friendships I have created over the years playing baseball. I have been playing with most of our team for the past ten years every spring, summer, and fall. All the time we have spent with each other on and off the field has made us a family. There is no better program or group of guys to play my final year of baseball with. The competition and work ethic is unmatched.
What advice do you have for aspiring MHS baseball players?
Povemba: I would tell future Tigers to trust the process and our coaches. Coach Chap, Glazer, and Novick have so much experience and knowledge about the sport. Following the lead of the coaches along with hard work will set them up for success.
Who are some people who have made the biggest impact on your baseball career?
Povemba: The biggest influence in my baseball career was one of my coaches when I was younger. I will never forget the time he yelled at me for letting the ball drop in front of me in center field because I was afraid it would go by. Since that day I have always been an extremely aggressive outfielder. I now dive for any ball I think I even have a chance of reaching which has been a huge part of my success.
