Pomperaug鈥檚 volleyball team is tough to beat with outstanding player Jordan Guerra
SOUTHBURY, Conn. — Pomperaug High School鈥檚 Varsity Volleyball team is a tough one to beat. Jordan Guerra, a senior, plays the position of libero. This role on the court is a defensive specialist and typically wears a different color from the rest of the team. Jordan has been honing her volleyball skills since sixth grade and has refined her play as libero.
Player of the Match Recognition
In October, Jordan was recognized as MAXPREPS Volleyball Player of the Match for her outstanding defensive play against league opponent, Masuk High School. She had the most digs, exceptional serve receive and passing, in addition to a few aces. Her performance and leadership on the court lead to a wide-margin win as she was key in stopping Masuk’s scoring efforts.
The team made it to the State Tournament this year and got a bye in first-round play based on their regular season performance. Unfortunately, in the second-round they went head-to-head with a team they had never faced before and despite their best effort, lost the match.
Jordan explained that, “It was difficult to prepare for a game without any idea how the team plays.”
Despite that, the PHS Varsity Volleyball team also made it to the South-West Conference (SWC) Tournament. In the semifinals, they faced neighboring Newtown High School. The rivalry between the teams made for an exciting and highly competitive match. It was a close, tension filled competition, and while Pomperaug didn鈥檛 come out on top with the win, they played well and persevered until the last point.
鈥淲hat I love most about volleyball is that every time you touch a ball, you can improve!鈥
“Being able to juggle school, sports, and social life was a challenge at first,” Jordan said, “but you just need to find the right rhythm.”
For school, she would do homework on bus rides, during JV games, and she took full advantage of study hall time. Her social life predominantly revolves around time with her teammates. They have sleepovers, team breakfasts, and always make the bus rides to and from matches a lot of fun.
Jordan happily shared about her teammates and their school spirit. Each game day, they would come up with a theme and dress to match it. Participation was required! There were themes like Hawaii, USA, senior citizen, Halloween, and even Adam Sandler day. It raised school spirit, strengthened team unity and helped fill the stands for big games.
The team ended the season with a record highlighted by 18 wins and only 2 losses. Jordan said she isn鈥檛 sure what is in store for the team next year but she’s confident with all of the talent and skill they have, the team is sure to achieve their goals. She wishes her teammates the best of luck and to remember to “always have fun!”
