Bismarck senior track runner wins 800-meter championship run with injury

BISMARCK, Ill. — Eli Mojonnier, a senior at Bismarck-Henning Rossville-Alvin Cooperative High School, is a track star.

On March 24, 2022, Eli won the Illinois Top Times Championship in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.37. He accomplished this with a broken wrist and a hard cast-a cast that was applied only two days before the track meet.

In 2021, Eli won the IHSA class 1A state championship in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.33 from the second flight. His time from the second flight beat everyone in the fastest flight, which ran after his race. He also ran the 1600m, finishing with a time of 4:32.45.

After the 800m race, track coach, Kaleb Weaver, said, 鈥淓li is one of the most self-driven athletes I’ve ever coached. He puts a tremendous amount of time and effort into training. The fact that Eli won the 800m while not running in the fastest heat is unbelievable and one of the most incredible accomplishments I’ve seen in the sport鈥.

Eli is only the second individual to win a state championship in any sport at Bismarck.

Last November, with his proud parents, Nathan and Amber Mojonnier, and his proud coaches looking on, Eli signed a national letter of intent to run track at Illinois State University next year. He intends to major in business.
