Sparta High鈥檚 Ally Sweeney excels on and off the court
SPARTA, N.J. — Sparta High School (SHS) junior Ally Sweeney began playing basketball at the tender age of 5 and never stopped. Those 11 years spent pounding the court most certainly paid off.
鈥淚鈥檝e started SHS varsity since freshman year and I also play for the United NJ, an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball program for which we travel across the country year round playing showcase tournaments,鈥� Sweeney explains.
During Sweeney鈥檚 three years with the SHS girls basketball team they鈥檝e won two tri-county titles and three straight division titles.
鈥淔or me, basketball is an escape from anything else that may be going on in my life. The basketball court is where I鈥檓 at ease. This sport has also provided me with unbreakable relationship bonds and valuable life lessons for which I鈥檓 forever grateful.鈥�
One such bond Sweeney values greatly is that which she formed with SHS girls basketball coach Catherine Wille.
鈥淐oach Wille is someone I admire dearly and to whom I owe many thanks. She鈥檚 helped me grow as a player, but even more so as a person. She and I have become very close as we鈥檝e worked to create something seriously special for this program.鈥�
Sweeney also excels at SHS off the court.
鈥淚鈥檝e consistently pursued honors and AP courses in most subjects and am a member of the National Honor Society.鈥�
Her combination of stellar basketball skills and academic success led to Sweeney being offered a full scholarship from, and committing to, Virginia鈥檚 University of Richmond at which she plans on majoring in psychology.
鈥淚 plan on attending extra years of school to earn my masters and PhD in psychology as well. Ideally, I鈥檒l specialize in cognitive psychology and enter the field of counseling, enabling me to help people daily.鈥�
Until then, Sweeney plans to continue hitting the books and the court during the school year and coaching young children during summertime.
鈥淚鈥檝e been giving little kids basketball lessons since last summer. Through this, I hope to pass on my knowledge and love for the game.鈥�
