Illinois Fighting Illini women’s volleyball win with intense defense against Brøndby

URBANA, Ill. (BVM) — The University of Illinois’ women volleyball team fought hard against Brøndby Volleyball Klub during their developmental season.

The normal volleyball season occurs during the fall, while during the spring the team plays their developmental season. During this season, the volleyball team works to strengthen beginning players and experienced players. The developmental season also consists of untimed games. In order for a team to win, they need to win by two points after getting past 25.

During the Illini’s developmental contest on March 9, both teams played to the best of their ability during the game as the first quarter started off intense and set the mood for the rest of the game. Through the first quarter, Brøndby was leading and continued to lead until the defense of the Illini started getting better and more attentive. Soon, the Illini took the lead and won the quarter, a back and forth affair which would be common during the contest. In the next quarter, Brøndby started off with less points, but took the lead. In order to win the whole game, a team would have to win three quarters out of the four.

The four quarters of this game were intense with back and forth aggressive defense around the net. The Fighting Illini women’s volleyball team tied with Brøndby that game with the quarters knotted up at two for Illini and two for Brøndby. This proves the energy both teams used to play.

Though this game was only a developmental game, it spoke to the character of both teams. The players could have been lenient because this season was not their real competitive season, but they put forth their all every time they step onto a volleyball court. It is exciting to see Illini’s team grow and build up their strengths as a team and as individual players. Illini fans will look forward to seeing how this developmental season shapes the program for their competitive season in the fall.
