In the spotlight at New Kent High
NEW KENT, Va. — New Kent High School Wrestling team under Head Coach John Goodbody won its fourth consecutive Group 3A State Wrestling title on February 18-19th.
The tournament took place in Salem, Virginia, and produced five state champions and one state runner-up for the Trojans. Taking home state champion honors were Trace Ragland, Patrick Jordan, Evan Holloway, Dominic Baker, and Nicholas Vafiadis, with Travis Ragland emerging as state runner up
New Kent amassed 273 points in the competition, easily distancing themselves from runner-up Skyline (173 points), and Staunton River (158 pounds).
Other Trojan wrestlers who made the podium were Daniel Colgin (third place- 113 pounds), Nathaniel Fly (third place- 182 pounds), Kyle Gibson (third place- 120 pounds), Samuel Stamper (fourth place- 106 pounds), Cole Townsend (fifth place- 195 pounds), and Matthew Eberly (sixth place- 126 pounds).
New Kent Lady Trojans also showed their prowess on the court as they advanced to the 3A Regional Finals after defeating Hopewell High School 50-33.
Though they lost to Lakeland High School (51-41) by making it to the Regional Final game, they were able to advance to the state playoffs for Class 3. In the
State quarterfinals they went against tough opponent Meridian High School. Though the Lady Trojans fought hard, they lost to Meridian 75-33.
