Syracuse 18, Hobart 16: Kraus-Simmons trophy resides in Syracuse after rivalry win against Hobart
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (BVM) 鈥� After a brutal three game losing streak that saw Syracuse (2-3, 0-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) play three ranked teams, the Orange were able to get back to their winning ways against the Hobart College Statesmen (2-2, 0-0 Northeast Conference).聽
Hobart jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first quarter, but by the end of the period Syracuse had taken control. Hobart tied the game at seven apiece with 3:28 remaining in the second, but was never able to get back in the lead.聽
The Syracuse lead was trimmed to just one with 37 seconds left in the game, but the Orange won the ensuing faceoff, ran down the clock, and senior Brendan Curry scored an open net goal with just 12 seconds left on the clock to ice the game.聽
Syracuse rode hot scoring days from redshirt junior Tucker Dordevic and Curry, both contributing five goals in the win.聽
After not playing Hobart last year, Syracuse won the Kraus-Simmons Trophy for the 33rd time in 37 games since the trophy was created in 1986. The trophy celebrates the illustrious careers of Babe Kraus of Hobart and Roy Simmons Sr. from Syracuse, as the two combined for over 450 career wins.聽
Having the trophy in Syracuse means a lot to the Orange and head coach Gary Gait, who won it for the first time as SU鈥檚 coach after winning it during his time as a player for the Orange.
鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 necessarily pretty, but we got the job done,鈥� Gait said. 鈥淩eally honoring the Simmons family and the tradition here, and certainly appreciative of the team鈥檚 effort to get the job done.鈥�
This game also has a special meaning for the players, and Curry is glad that they were able to win the trophy for coach Roy Simmons III.聽
鈥淲e鈥檝e gone through a lot in the last five years, and I think there鈥檚 been a constant person and coach that鈥檚 helped us on and off the field, and that鈥檚鈥� Coach Simmons,鈥� Curry said. 鈥淭o be able to do that for him and show that gratification to him, and then to see him look up at his dad once we hoisted the trophy, it was just an awesome celebration for him and really fun.鈥�
Gait is hopeful that this win will help to propel the Orange to more victories throughout the season with so many tough games to come.
鈥淎fter going three games without getting one, to come out on top will help us,鈥� Gait said. 鈥淲e can build from it and move on to the next game.鈥�
This is the second game in a row that Curry has scored four or more goals, a streak that he credits to the coaching staff.
鈥淲e鈥檙e just putting ourselves in better opportunities to score more. It鈥檚 been fun opening the offense up,鈥� Curry said. 鈥淐oach Gait and Coach March did a great job in putting us in our strengths and where we鈥檙e able to succeed.鈥�Syracuse will look to continue its momentum next week when they travel to Maryland to face John Hopkins, another Syracuse rival with a lot of history.
