Bloomington area high school athletes compete at the top
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — Bloomington High School senior Jack Weltha won the Class 2A state wrestling title at 220 pounds with a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the championship match at State Farm Center in Champaign. Weltha defeated Waterloo鈥檚 Jordan Sommers, 5-3, with a takedown in overtime. Weltha, who will play football at Truman State, finished the season 35-3. Raiders teammates Carson Nishida (120 pounds) and Anthony Curry (195) finished fifth. University High鈥檚 Hunter Otto also placed fifth at 285.
Normal Community juniors Pyper Wood and Shelby Hailey and Normal West junior Sammy Lehr qualified for the first ever IHSA girls individual state wrestling meet at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.
University High junior Camden Swigart placed third in the 200-yard individual medley at the Boys State Swimming and Diving Meet at FMC Natatorium in Westmont. He also finished sixth in the 100 breaststrokes.
Normal Community junior Josh Fujimoto took fourth in the 500 freestyle while senior Tyson Tucci was fifth. Tucci was also 11th in the 200 freestyle.
Normal West senior softball players Claire Post and Landes Benedict signed national letters of intent to continue their careers after high school. Post will attend Illinois Wesleyan and play softball for the Titans, while Benedict is headed to Olivet Nazarene.
University High鈥檚 competitive cheer team finished in fifth place in the Medium Team class of the IHSA State meet at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.
