Woodgrove girls take Region 5D title with 63-42 win over Briar Woods
PURCELLVILLE, Va. — The best of the best in VHSL Region 5D girls basketball showed up at Woodgrove High School on Tuesday night, and everything was left on the court. In front of a packed house, both teams started out strong leading to a 14-14 tie at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Woodgrove began to apply intense defensive pressure and outscored Briar Woods, 16-7. The second half was more of the same from the Wolverines who played unselfish team basketball with great ball movement, creating open looks for the game’s leading scorer Ashley Steadman who knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 24 points. Sadie Shores was sensational on the inside, dumping in 23 points.
Other scorers included Tara Mullen (7 points), Colette Bain (5 points), Jenna Steadman (5 points), and Tamitha Miller (1 point).
The Wolverines’ collaborative play-style and stellar defense will be essential in the upcoming tournament for the state title as they try to bring the crown home to Purcellville.
