Homestead High concludes season having reached new feat and winning record
MEQUON, Wis. — For the past 20 years, Homestead High School girls basketball has been chasing a conference title. Hard work paid off this year for the Highlanders as they defeated Cedarburg 58-51 to become North Shore Conference champions.
鈥淚鈥檝e been really fortunate to coach some good teams and great players, but this team had depth. We had a lot of skilled and athletic players this year. But ultimately, they were very unselfish and made the game look easy,鈥 head coach Corey Wolf said.
The Highlanders were led to a 17-1 regular season finish by freshman Madison Fitzgibbon. Not only did she score 503 total points in her first year on the squad, she also earned all-conference honors as the North Shore Conference Player of the Year.
鈥淚 have learned how details are very important and if you want to win you have to do the little things,鈥 Fitzgibbon said.
Delaney Buzzell, junior, and Natalie Mueller, freshman, also earned all-conference honors 鈥 second and third team respectively.
Bringing home the first conference title since the 2001-2002 season put the team in a good position heading into the WIAA playoffs where they hoped to make a deep run. They fell short to Divine Savior Holy Angels in the second round, and Highlanders鈥 incredible season came to a close, capping off the year with a 21-5 record.
Six out of the 13 players were freshmen; the team will be losing just two seniors so the roster will remain relatively unchanged for next fall. With such a young team, Wolf and her staff will have even greater expectations for growth and success.
鈥淚 think all our players will take a big step forward next year. They got a taste of success, but they want more and that motivates them all offseason,鈥 Wolf said.
