ELLENSBURG, Wash. — A Q&A with Central Washington head WVB coach Mario Andaya.
What is your background in this sport?
Mario Andaya: Played Men’s Club in college.聽 Played Football, basketball, and track in High School, but started to gain interest in volleyball participating in outdoor doubles volleyball.
What are one or two things that the team does in training that are keys to their success?
Andaya: Always improve and always compete.
Please describe the most memorable games/tournaments/championships your team has won.
Andaya: Our 2004 Team went 26-0 and was one of only 6 teams in NCAAA history at the time to go undefeated in the regular season. The team was inducted into the CWU Hall of Fame.
How do you encourage the team after a disappointing loss?
Andaya: We talk about the things we could have controlled better, and put our focus on what could be done moving forward.聽 This helps us stay productive and optimistic in our next training session and our next match.
Describe your proudest coaching moment.聽
Andaya: Every alumni night when our former players come back to reconnect and watch a match always gives me a tremendous amount of gratitude.
What is the biggest life lesson you’ve learned from being a coach?
Andaya: Dream big and work hard on the process of achieving those dreams.
What legacy do you hope to leave as a coach?
Andaya: My hope is that the players and staff that have come through CWU Volleyball program felt like they were a part of something special.聽 That our program helped mold them into a better person.

Andaya: Being connected to CWU and the Ellensburg community has been a blessing to me and my family.
