Teeing off with Tesoro HS golfer and Illinois commit Ryan Voois

LADERA RANCH, Calif. — Ryan Voois, Ladera Ranch resident and golfer at Tesoro High School, will be continuing his athletic and academic journey at the University of Illinois next fall. While Voois loves the big school vibe and its college town feel, he is also excited to play for Fighting Illini golf coach Mike Small.

鈥淎s far as coaches go in college, I believe he鈥檚 as good as it gets,鈥 says Voois. 鈥淭hey just won their sixth straight Big Ten Championship; that鈥檚 their 11th in 12 years.鈥

Voois is coming off two strong individual tournament wins鈥攖he 2021 Inland Empire Amateur in September and the 2021 Agave Amateur in late December. In the weeks leading up to the Inland Empire tournament, he played some of the best golf of his life. Then suddenly, the week before tee-off, Voois recalls his game completely falling off.

鈥淕olf is a really mental game,鈥 Voois explains. 鈥淚 mean, if you can control the mind and stay positive鈥攅asier said than done 鈥攜ou have a much better chance at success.鈥 The night before his next round, Voois worked with his mental coach, John Ellsworth, who reminded him of the importance of 鈥渃ontrolling the controllables.鈥

After a lackluster but not out-of-it first round, Voois had a better second round and knew he was in the hunt for a win with a solid third round. He brought on his good friend and fellow Tesoro golf teammate, Chase Goetschel, as caddy. With calmed nerves and a buddy at his side, Voois reflects, 鈥淚 had my best round of the year鈥 just everything was working.鈥

Voois is continually working to improve his golf game even when he鈥檚 not competing. Focusing on his four facets to practice鈥攑utting, chipping, swinging, and playing on the course鈥攈e tries to limit each section to an hour to avoid getting frustrated. 鈥淚鈥檒l putt for an hour; I鈥檒l chip for an hour. I鈥檒l hit for an hour,鈥 Voois shares, 鈥淎nd then I鈥檒l go out and play nine holes.鈥

While golf makes attending all necessary school classes difficult, Voois maintains an extremely impressive 4.8 GPA. He encourages student-athletes to develop relationships with other people who can help fill you in on what is missed. 鈥淵ou have to get the notes and the homework,鈥 says Voois, 鈥淎nd you鈥檙e probably going to need help if you missed the lesson.鈥

While Voois found his passion on the golf course, he knows it鈥檚 not for everyone. 鈥淕et exposure to a bunch of different sports,鈥 Voois suggests, 鈥淎 lot of times, you鈥檒l step onto the court or the course, and something will just click.

鈥淏ut you have to do what you like to do,鈥 says Voois. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e never going to be good at something if you don鈥檛 like to do it because it takes a lot of practice.鈥

Voois does not plan on ending his golfing journey any time soon, and he鈥檚 confident Illinois is the best place for him to flourish and develop into a professional golfer. Whether on the golf course, in the classroom, or out in the world, Voois is recognized by both his peers and competitors as humble and dedicated. He鈥檚 a class act, and he鈥檚 going places. Keep an eye out for Ryan Voois!
