Westlake girls lacrosse season preview
WESTLAKE, Ohio — While the weather outside may not look like it, spring sports season is upon us! The Westlake High School Girls Lacrosse team has already started practice and is excited to build upon their success from the 2021 season.听
As my second year as Head Coach approaches, I鈥檓 thrilled to be back on the field and am impressed with the hard work the team has put in. As soon as the 2021 season ended, the team started preparing for this season, putting in hard work in the weight room and working on their individual stick skills. It was clear on the first day of practice that the time and effort the team put in during the offseason has paid off. The team is practicing hard and looking good.
Junior defender and midfielder, Kylie King agrees, exclaiming, 鈥淚鈥檓 excited to start the season! The feeling of putting your cleats on and stepping on the field again is an amazing feeling!鈥�听 听
The Demons have a lot to be excited about with fifteen seniors returning in 2022 led by midfielder, returning captain, and 2021 First Team All-Region selection Heidi Pirnat. Pirnat will look to become the Demons all-time goals leader this season as she is only eight goals shy of breaking the career goals record. The midfield runs deep with Abbie Gardner, Cami Whitesell, Maddie Gentzel, and Marie Hirz also returning. Gardner and Whitesell were both 2021 Honorable Mention All-Region.听
Defensively the Demons will be anchored by goalie Leah Behra, who set the single season saves record for the Demons in 2021. Behra will be surrounded by senior defenders Anna Curtis, Hannah Goyetche, Morgan Miller, Rashida Musfafa, Lauren Novak, and Grace Romansky.听
On the offensive end of the field the Demons are looking to replace five graduating seniors at attack. With veteran seniors Erin Blood, Lexi Hlavin, and Corrine Wilson taking the lead, the offense shouldn鈥檛 miss a step as they look to improve upon their 2021 numbers.听
In addition to the large and experienced senior class, the Varsity team has fourteen returning juniors and a few sophomores looking to compete for playing time. The Junior Varsity team, led by Bill Bongers and Lainey Novak, will be an exciting team to watch develop with over twenty players on the roster. 听
The Westlake High School Girls Lacrosse team will open their season at home hosting Mentor on March 22 with Junior Varsity at 5:30pm and Varsity at 7:00pm. We can鈥檛 wait to get out there and compete. Come out and show your support!
