Nicole Pompili: Persevering through pain for an incredible senior season at Pennsbury

FAIRLESS HILLS, Pa. — The Pennsbury High School (PHS) girls basketball team made program history this year, clinching their third consecutive Suburban One League title after an incredible season, winning 91% of their games. The success of the team was earned through hard work and dedication. Seniors Ava Sciolla and Nicole Pompili lead the charge in their final game in the teams鈥 regular season, dominating the court and overtaking Council Rock North 44-12 to clinch the title.

In her four years as a varsity player, Pompili contributed to her team through more than just athletics. Her mental toughness and positive attitude, both on and off the court, made an important impact. Despite injuries that kept her from the court in her junior year, in May of 2021, she committed to Elizabethtown College to play women鈥檚 basketball for the E-town Blue Jays. Then in the fall of 2021, she returned to the court and played fiercely for PHS.

鈥淐oaching her is a joy,鈥 PHS head girls basketball coach Frank Sciolla said. 鈥淪he doesn’t allow her ego to hold her back. She doesn’t expect to be given anything, and she doesn’t feel like she is owed anything. She just competes and tries to get better every day.

鈥淒uring sophomore year, Nicole started on a team that won the Suburban One League title, advanced to the district title game, and was in the state quarterfinals before Covid ended their season. During sophomore year, Nicole injured her wrist and we felt that loss severely. Then, in the summer before her junior year, she injured her foot playing club basketball. The ensuing surgery led her to miss her junior season.鈥

Before returning to play at PHS for senior year, Pompili’s rehab was difficult.

鈥淪he approached rehab with a great attitude,鈥 Sciolla said. 鈥淪he has an incredible work ethic and returned in the best shape of her life. We immediately felt her presence on the court. In our second game this season, she drew an incredible six charges.鈥

Pompili had an incredible senior year for the Lady Falcons.

鈥淪he plays way bigger than her height (5-foot-4) would indicate,鈥 Sciolla said. 鈥淎t North Penn in January, Nicole scored a career-high of 22 points and pulled down 9 rebounds.鈥

The Lady Falcons won 20 of their 22 games during the regular season. Watching the team play has been exhilarating, and Pompili has been a standout throughout the season. Her speed, agility, and precision are unparalleled, and she plays with both passion and finesse. The team has been playing to packed stands with hundreds of cheering fans at the Falcon鈥檚 Nest at PHS.

In addition to her athletic success, Pompili is a member of the National Honor Society, recognized as a student that exemplifies a positive attitude, reliability, and inspires positive behavior in others.

鈥淪he’s one of the mentally toughest kids I’ve ever coached,鈥 Sciolla said.
