The big impact of coach Steve Small in Mount Washington and surrounding areas
MOUNT WASHINGTON, Ky. — As Coach Steve Small always says: You can leave something for people (or) you can leave something in people.
Coach Small started his coaching career at Mount Washington Middle School in 1972 as the 9th grade football coach. He helped with both boys and girls basketball and was the track and field coach, and of course, drove the bus.
When Bullitt East opened in 1980, he became the varsity girls basketball coach and did the track and field program 1980-1984. He left to become the assistant girl’s basketball coach at Western Kentucky University, then the associate head coach in 1992 and the head coach in 1996 and retiring in 2001. At Western, the program went to 15 NCAA tournaments, three final fours, and played for the national championship in 1992, losing to Stanford.
That team was recently inducted into Westerns Hall of Fame. Coach Small then became director of sports tourism in Bowling Green for five years, where he was part of bringing the girl’s state basketball tournament to Bowling Green, the boys and girls state golf tournament to Bowling Green, and involved in the Soap Box Derby and BB gun events. He left in 2005 to return to Mount Washington. He took the girl’s basketball program at Assumption High school for three years.
He has been the manager at Club Fitness in Mount Washington for the past five years, helping people in fitness training. Oh yes, now training the girl’s basketball teams and boys basketball teams to get ready for their seasons, doing public speaking around the state.
