Westlake wrestling team has a season for the record books
WESTLAKE, Ohio — Losing 9 seniors to graduation after the 2020-2021 season left many wondering about how the Westlake Demons boys basketball team would fare in the 2021-2022 season. The returning Demons answered that question definitively on their way to a season for the record books as the team left their stamp on the Great Lakes Conference in their first year in the league.
On their way to setting a number of records, the Demons won both the GLC West Division (sharing the title with Fairview with a record of 8-2) and the GLC Tournament (defeating Valley Forge in the championship game). Those accomplishments helped contribute to a WHS record for best single season record at 20-3, including a 13 game winning streak. The Demons also set a school record for points in a season, scoring 1,771 points. That worked out to an average of 77 points per game, making Westlake one of the top 3 scoring teams in the state of Ohio (highlighted by 101 points in a win over Oberlin).
The road to the GLC title was a difficult one.聽After losing to Bay on January 8, the Demons were two games behind Fairview in the standings.聽 From that point on, the Demons won 11 straight GLC games (including wins over Fairview in the regular season and wins over Lakewood, Normandy, Buckeye, and Valley Forge in the GLC Tournament) to win their two championships.
The team was led by a tremendous group of eight seniors.聽Ray Ellington highlighted the group on his way to a record season.聽Ray broke a 49-year-old record for points in a season (previously held by Ron Laraway at 520) by scoring 579 points for an average of 25.2 points per game.聽Ray also set the record for points in a game (45), 3-pointers in a game (9) and 3-pointers in a season (69).聽 For his efforts, Ray was named MVP of the GLC.
Fellow senior Greyson Elyaderani broke his own school record for single game assists with 11.聽Greyson and junior Will Ostrowski were named First聽Team All-GLC.聽Senior Basheer Alramahi was named Second聽Team All-GLC.聽 Senior Julian Coleman and sophomore Derek Occhipinti were named Honorable Mention All-GLC.聽Many of those players will be recognized with All-District and possibly All-Ohio recognition in the coming weeks.
