Ramapo HS fencer Colin Wiechmann inching towards 100 wins
WYCKOFF, N.J. — En Garde!聽Colin Wiechmann is ready to advance and attack as a member of the Ramapo High School boys鈥 fencing team. The high school junior has used his 茅p茅e sword to capture 33 wins and 9 losses for the 2021-22 season.
鈥淔encing is physical chess,鈥 said Colin. 鈥淚f you are not smart about your moves, you won鈥檛 get points.鈥
Colin says his strategy is to be explosive on an attack.
鈥淵ou need to move fast and get in and get out before your opponent can touch you with his weapon,鈥 said Colin. 鈥淚 try to keep a good mindset and not panic during a bout.鈥
At 5鈥 7鈥, Colin says he is currently one of the shortest people on the Ramapo team, but his height has never prevented him from defeating taller or more experienced opponents.
鈥淲hen I was a freshman, I was only 5鈥 4鈥 and out onto the strip walked this 6鈥 2鈥 senior with all of this confidence, especially when he saw I was his opponent,鈥 recalls Colin. 鈥淗e might have had longer arms, but I was able to overcome that disadvantage and win the bout.鈥
Maintaining his positive attitude and finding a strategy that allows him to defeat his opponent has contributed to the teams鈥 success.
Last season, the Ramapo Raiders had an undefeated (9-0) season and ranked as a top 10 team in New Jersey. They continue undefeated this season and recently captured first place in both the District 1 and Bergen County tournaments. They are headed to the Sweet Sixteen in the state tournament. Colin鈥檚 high school career statistics stand at 69 wins and 16 losses.
鈥淚 have a goal to get to 100 wins,鈥 said Colin.
Colin became interested in fencing when he was in middle school and attended a fencing demonstration at the Wyckoff Free Public Library.
鈥淭he Ramapo team put on a demonstration and I liked the power and speed of the sport,鈥 said Colin. 鈥淚 liked that it was more of an individual sport. It鈥檚 up to you to fight the opponent.鈥
Colin began fencing in eighth grade at the Arena Fencing Academy in Waldwick and continues to fence with this club.
鈥淚 fence in tournaments year round in surrounding states,鈥 said Colin. 鈥淚 am currently a D rated fencer.鈥
The 16-year-old wants to thank his parents, Kevin and Nancy, for supporting his fencing endeavors.
鈥淲e have spent many weekends traveling and in hotel rooms for fencing,鈥 said Colin. 鈥淢y parents are very supportive.鈥
