From Zane Trace to Otterbein University, MBB guard Cam Evans is putting in the work
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Cam Evans is taking his love for basketball to the next level and he鈥檚 finding success. I had the opportunity to ask him a couple questions and he told me quickly about his love of basketball. 鈥淪tarting my sports career growing up, I always loved basketball the most,鈥 he said.聽 After a few more questions, it was clear Cam isn鈥檛 afraid of some hard work.
鈥淒uring my freshman year, I played mostly varsity minutes, but had to play on the JV team a little bit. My sophomore year, I started varsity and started to become a little bit more of a scorer, and our team record was a little bit better than my freshman year. I continued to work on my game outside of practices and went into my junior year and averaged about 25 ppg and Zane Trace won a Gold Ball in league play. Senior year, I averaged the same points pretty much, and Zane Trace won another league championship. When I graduated, we (had) won 2 SVC championships, 2 Sectional and District Championships. I was chosen as Player of the Year in the conference and the District and won 2nd Team All-Ohio Honors.鈥
That hard work is paying off at the next level. After graduating from Zane Trace, Evans went on to play college basketball at Otterbein University. His first year was a little different because of COVID, but he is really starting to flourish this season.
鈥淚 committed to Otterbein University and last year was pretty crazy. I was only able to play in 6 or 7 games due to quarantines, but ended up averaging about 10 points a game off the bench. Now it鈥檚 a little bit more normal and I鈥檓 having a lot more fun with the game and this year. I鈥檝e been coming off the bench and getting about 20-25 minutes a game when I normally score anywhere from 10-18 points. I just try to do anything to help the team win and we are currently 9-2.鈥 At the end of December 2021, Cam won the Smokey Ballenger All Tournament Team award, putting up a game-high 18 points in one game and a team-high 15 points in the second game.
I asked Cam what keeps him motivated to work hard and be successful. His answer impressed me as much as his talent on the court. 鈥淪omething that motivates me to try and be successful in college and throughout the offseason is definitely my teammates. All my guys here at Otterbein work their butts off day in and day out and I notice how hard they work for me, so it motivates me even more to work as hard as I can for them.鈥 Evans also spoke highly of another source of motivation.
鈥淢y mom is a huge motivator in my life. She always keeps me humble and pushes me to be better 鈥 but also having her at every one of my games cheering me on, no matter what happens, has always helped motivate me. She鈥檚 encouraged me from the very beginning and I always want to do my best for her.鈥 He continued with words of praise for his current coach. 鈥淎nother person who motivates me is my head coach Andy Winters. He expects the best out of me every single day and always brings intensity and competition to practice. He has been helping me learn more and more about the game and always breaks down film with me and helps me improve in any way that I can.鈥
As of the beginning of January, Cam was averaging 10+ points per game and only looking to improve. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for this young man.
