A decade strong: Get to know Tesoro High football HC Matt Poston
LADERA RANCH, Calif. — Matt Poston, or Coach Poston as his players and students know him, was raised in Huntington Beach. He attended Huntington Beach High School, where he proved a valuable member of the football team, earning 1st Team All Sunset League honors as an Offensive Lineman and the school鈥檚 Lineman of the Year recognition. He was also a Team Captain. The Oilers enjoyed one of their most successful seasons during 1992 and eventually lost in the CIF playoffs to Esperanza High School鈥攖he team that became CIF champions that year.
He went to the University of Redlands to play football but was sidelined by a career-ending injury his freshman year. He then transferred to the University of Arizona, where he earned his degree in business management.
Coach Poston first came to Tesoro High School when the school opened in 2001. He was hired as a mathematics teacher and served as the Head Freshman Football Coach for six years. His team鈥檚 overall record was 54-6, and they won their league every year but one.
In 2007, Coach Poston was promoted to Varsity Defensive Coordinator and held that position for three years. The Titans were 25-10 and won the South Coast League twice during that time. In 2008, the Tesoro Titans had a remarkable season going 13-1, only eventually losing to Long Beach Poly in the CIF Championship.
In 2010, Coach Poston left Tesoro to become the Head Football Coach at Capo Valley High School. In his three years at Capo, he revitalized a program that hadn鈥檛 had a winning record since 1996. In 2010, the Cougars finished last in their league. In 2011, they flipped a switch and ended up in 2nd place. Then, in their 2012 season, Capo Valley earned its first League Championship since 1995.
When the Tesoro Head Football Coach position came open in 2013, Coach Poston felt it was time to go 鈥渉ome鈥 to the school and program he had helped build for nine years. Since his return, Poston鈥檚 Titans have been a constant in the Top 10 for Orange County and have qualified for the CIF playoffs all but one season.
Coach Poston lives in Ladera Ranch with his beautiful and supportive wife, Regan. They鈥檝e been married for 20 years. His son, Keegan (17), enjoys playing basketball and is a junior at Tesoro this year, and his daughter, Josi (15), attends the same school as a sophomore and plays soccer.
Coach Poston is extremely excited to be leading this very accomplished football program in his 10th year.
