Isaac Eibel makes the shot of a lifetime on the Ryle HS court

UNION, Ky. — Teammate, competitor, resilient, friend, athlete, independent, leader…these are just a few of the words that were used to describe Isaac Eibel by some of his friends and former teachers.

Isaac is currently a senior at Ryle High School and the boys’ basketball team manager. Last Monday, he got the shot of a lifetime…a chance to not only receive a starting spot in the lineup on Ryle’s senior night, but to also make the opening bucket of the game!

Isaac has been waiting for this moment since his freshman year of high school, when he first became the boys’ basketball manager.  However, Isaac is more than just the team’s manager; he is accepted as a teammate, one of the guys, and a true asset to the team.

Isaac has overcome a lot of obstacles in his life, one of those being that he was born with Down Syndrome.  However, he has never let that hold him back from reaching his goals. In the sports realm, Isaac is a basketball manager, an athlete for Ryle’s Special Olympics Unified bowling and track teams, and an athlete in multiple Special Olympic sports such as basketball, softball, and swimming.

Isaac has also taken on many leadership opportunities in his school including a member of the Boone County Student Board Council and a co-leader in Club Unified (an inclusive club at Ryle that promotes meaningful friendships between students with and without disabilities).  As if this was not impressive enough, Isaac currently has a part time job at the Kroger located in Union, KY.  Isaac has been a trailblazer for spreading inclusion and awareness not only in his school, but in his community as well. He has shown that people with disabilities are not defined by a label and are capable of anything they put their minds to!
