West Michigan all-state wide receiver Andon Grigg has arrived

HOLLAND, Mich. — Holland High School senior wide receiver Andon Grigg has etched his name in Dutch football lore.

In December, Grigg earned Associated Press Division 3-4 All-State first team honors. Incredibly, this was only his second year playing high school football.

Yet his extraordinary athletic ability and coachability fueled massive on-field gains.

Grigg quickly grasped the game鈥檚 finer points and applied them on the gridiron. As a junior, he recorded 35 catches and more than 600 yards with seven scores over an abbreviated 2020 season.

This year, Grigg exploded for 70 receptions and 1,123 yards along with 16 touchdowns. What鈥檚 more, he tossed a touchdown pass and even scored on special teams.

鈥淭he growth (he made) over two years was tremendous,鈥 former Holland head coach Shawn McManus said. 鈥淗is ability to learn the nuances of the position really put him over the top. Andon also produced against top notch competition.鈥

Dutch varsity football and baseball assistant coach Zachary Kapla agreed.

鈥淭his year, his route running and release at the line of scrimmage improved tremendously,鈥 Kapla said. 鈥淗is football IQ in understanding coverages increased as well.鈥

Grigg has played baseball with Dutch quarterback Zach Hop since they were in elementary school. That could be a reason why things clicked so quick for him.

Grigg鈥檚 first love is baseball. He shines on the diamond. Grigg pitched a no-hitter in May against rival Wyoming. Plus, he is a two-way player that keys the Dutch offense. In 2021, he placed on the OK Green All-Conference first team.

As a number of coaches predicted, his skill set has proven to be well-suited for pigskin play.

鈥淚 first noticed his ability to track a baseball and adjust naturally to it in flight,鈥 Kapla expressed. 鈥淲ith his natural athleticism, there were several of us (players and coaches) that encouraged him to play football.鈥

Besides coaxing from coaches and teammates, Grigg has football in his blood.

鈥淗e is a great young man and a heck of a football player,鈥 Holland offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Brian Sackett said. 鈥淚 reminded him that his dad was a heck of a tight end and I was sure the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. I grew up with his dad back in Fennville so I was familiar with his family.鈥

Sackett offered high praise for the senior star.

鈥淗e always has a smile on his face, has a great work ethic and a toughness that you don’t typically find at the wide receiver position and that’s a huge compliment to his parents,鈥 Sackett said. 鈥淗e is easily one of the most naturally gifted athletes that I’ve ever coached. From a wide receiver perspective, he has all of the tools. He has rewritten the record books for his position at Holland High.鈥

No telling what the future may hold for Grigg.
