SPRING CREEK, Nev. — The Spring Creek Spartans’ 2021 season started with the new head coach, A.J. Wilson, who was quite familiar with the team, having been an assistant coach in the past. Previous head coach, Mike Tournahu, stepped down but stayed on with the team as the defensive and offensive lines coach. In the previous season, the Spartans finished with an overall 3-3 record with a weak offensive side of the ball. This year, they had a target to go beyond this level and show significant improvement.

Wilson believed in his boys despite losing almost every starter on the offensive side.

鈥淭he offense will look a lot different than it has for the past 25 years,鈥� Wilson . 鈥淲e鈥檙e moving to a spread. We have good skill players, they鈥檙e quick and we want to spread the field.鈥�

Wilson鈥檚 belief got his team the victory in the very first match of the season against Pershing County. This built up their confidence, and they beat Hug Hawks in the next game.

They lost the two subsequent games with Truckee Wolverines and Churchill County, and won only one more match afterward with Dayton.

Wilson wasn鈥檛 happy at a loss with Truckee Wolverines but still motivated the team.

Their overall record for the season stood at 3-4, with a league record of 1-3 and a state division ranking of 14, which was not too bad compared to the previous year. However, they are yet to break their previous record with coach Joel Jund, which was their best season in 2016-17, and they finished with a record of 11-1 with the best state division rank of No. 2.

Their home ground seems to be their strength as they won all three matches on their home field. Despite the circumstances, Wilson did not stop encouraging his team.

The last two seasons were affected by COVID-19 in one way or another; however, the team is looking forward to the new year to work on achieving their targets.
