Ryan Burger looks forward to standing out at Appalachian State
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Myrtle Beach High School quarterback Ryan Burger is excited to be joining the Appalachian State Mountaineers football program in 2022. The three-star quarterback has been heralded as an outstanding pro-style quarterback who had been sought after by a few other schools, including Tulane, Charlotte and Dartmouth. He even received an offer from Coastal Carolina down the street.
But Burger found the approach Appalachian State offers in Boone, North Carolina, more appealing.
鈥淚t鈥檚 relaxed but blue collar and you know when to work and I think I鈥檓 a lot like that,鈥� Burger . 鈥淭hey鈥檝e got a great program, great tradition and they win a lot of football games.鈥�
Burger was one of the top quarterbacks in South Carolina in 2021. He helped lead the Myrtle Beach Seahawks to a 9-2 record in 2021. The school made it to the Class 4A lower state title game, losing to Beaufort by one point. It was also rated as the top football program in the city of Myrtle Beach for 2021.
Burger had 2,493 passing yards and 25 touchdowns with the Seahawks. His performance led the Seahawks to score 445 points, nearly three times what the team鈥檚 opponents scored all season.
Scouts have listed Burger as a pro-style quarterback, as he plays an offensive system similar to what people will find in the NFL. The style entails pocket passing and a focus on throwing instead of general athleticism. While pro-style quarterbacks traditionally have strong footwork skills and are capable of reading defenses well, they aren鈥檛 always going to focus on running the ball. The style he uses is expected to be valuable to Appalachian State, especially as he is expected to see some time in action as a freshman.
Burger will be joining an Appalachian State football program that has been highly competitive in the Sun Belt Conference. The Mountaineers went 10-4 in 2021, winning the Sun Belt East title. The school lost to Louisiana in the Sun Belt championship game and then to Western Kentucky in the Boca Raton Bowl.
The Mountaineers have been highly competitive in the last few years, winning six consecutive bowl games from 2015 to 2020.
He鈥檒l also be returning to the Myrtle Beach area in 2022, as the Mountaineers will have a road game against fellow Sun Belt rival Coastal Carolina that season.
