Playoff disappointment ends the Verona Wildcats’ season

VERONA, Wis. — The Verona Wildcats boys varsity high school football team finished a disappointing season recently, as the playoffs spelled the end of the year. What started off as a very strong season quickly came to a collapse as conference play late in the season took away the Wildcats’ momentum. Now they are left to reflect on what could have been as the Wildcats will surely be having a serious look at how they can improve on both sides of the ball  in the offseason.

As mentioned, the Verona High School Wildcats got off to a great start to their season. Their nonconference schedule showed some terrific results where both sides of the ball were strong. The Wildcats started the season with a win on the road over Kenosha Tremper High School where they dominated the game, winning 42-7. The second and final nonconference game of the season was another road game. This one was much closer against Oshkosh West High School, but the Wildcats would emerge victorious again, winning 17-14.

At a perfect 2-0 on the season, the Wildcats would enter conference play. The first game of this would lead to their first loss of the season at home against Madison Memorial High School. The offense would be the culprit in game, only putting up nine points in a 12-9 loss.

The next three conference games, however, would go the way of the Wildcats. They defeated Madison West, Beloit Memorial and Madison La Follette High School, averaging over 50 points per game during this stretch of wins.

Unfortunately, the offense would go cold the following week as Verona would get shut out in a 30-0 loss at home to Middleton High School. The Wildcats would be given a win by forfeit the next week against Madison East High School before losing their final game of the regular season to Sun Prairie High School 38-35.

With a 6-3 regular season record, the Wildcats would qualify for the playoffs, but would have to go on the road for the first round against Fond Du Lac High School. This would be as far as the Wildcats got as they lost in convincing fashion 31-13.

A disappointing season was in the books for Verona High School as now all they can do is look forward. Improving their home record will surely be one of the priorities in the offseason if they hope to turn their program into a state title contender.
