Franklin Lions capture first-ever football state title
FRANKLIN, Texas (BVM) 鈥� Every school dreams of capturing a state title. For the Franklin Lions, that dream came true in December 2021.
鈥淲e know what was going to happen,鈥� Franklin running back Malcom Murphy said in a with Bally Sports Southwest. 鈥淢y class made history and we finished with a bang.鈥�
Led by Murphy, the Lions were able to pull away from Gunter High School and won 49-35. Murphy finished the game with 280 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns and two interceptions.聽

In the fourth quarter, the game was tied at 35 and Murphy ripped off a 61-yard TD run and followed that up with an 86-yard TD. Two significant plays by Murphy helped secure the Class 3A football championship for the Lions. With this performance, Murphy showed why he is destined for the bright lights.聽
鈥淸Did] all I can to win the game and bring Franklin its first championship,鈥� Murphy said. 鈥淟ike I tell everybody, big-time players make big-time plays. I鈥檓 a big-time player.鈥�
It was a special year for the Lions. They finished 16-0 and set a Class 3A state record for offense (527 yards) in the final game of the season. Every yard was achieved through the ground game.
Now, the Lions are set to defend their crown for the first time in school history. It鈥檒l be a tough task, but with Coach Mark Fannin at the helm and the first state championship in the trophy case, this team will be hungrier than ever.
