BRANDON, Manitoba — Let’s look at three Brandon athletes who went on to play football professionally after starting their careers playing high school football in Brandon.
Israel Idonije
High School: Vincent Massey
University: University of Manitoba
Israel Idonije was a defensive end who played 11 seasons in the NFL from 2003-2013 accumulating 29 sacks over the course of his career. The majority of Idonije’s career was spent with the Chicago Bears where he was a key member of their defensive unit. He spent his first season in the NFL on the Cleveland Brown’s practice squad and his final year in the NFL with the Detroit Lions, before retiring.
Chris Bauman
High School: Vincent Massey
University: University of Regina
Chris Bauman was a wide receiver who played 6 seasons in the CFL from 2007-2012. He was drafted first overall in the CFL entry draft in 2007 by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Bauman spent his first four years with the Tiger-Cats before playing one season each with both the Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Stampeders.
Landon Rice
High School: Crocus Plains
University: University of Manitoba
Landon Rice is an offensive lineman for the Montreal Alouettes currently entering his 9th season in the CFL. He was signed by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2013 as an undrafted free agent where he played the majority of his first 5 seasons before making his way to the Alouettes. Rice was named the Alouettes’ most outstanding offensive lineman this year and was a first selection for the CFL East Division All-Star team.
