December spotlights: Costa Mesa and Estancia HS scholar-athletes

COSTA MESA, Calif. — Each month, the Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa recognizes and honors exceptional Scholar-Athletes from Estancia High School and Costa Mesa High School. The award recipients are not only leaders on the field, court, or pool, but also in the classroom.

On December 16, 2021, these stellar Scholar-Athletes were honored in a special Kiwanis award ceremony.

ESTANCIA HIGH SCHOOL

Ashley Nieto – Senior, Soccer聽

“Ashley is a good student and a kind hearted teammate. Ashley is a 4-year member of the program and first time Varsity member. So far, Ashley has played almost every minute of every game this year. She is a hard worker at practice and is always willing to help out wherever needed. Ashley does all this while also working part time.” – Coach Josh Juarez

Lewis Tate – Senior, Basketball; GPA: 3.0

“Lewis is one of the Captains of our Varsity basketball team because of his commitment to excellence both on and off the court. Currently, Lewis has a 3.0 GPA and he would like to attend Greenville University and major in Mechanical Engineering. On the court, Lewis is our hardest worker and one of the best all around kids I have ever coached. His enthusiasm is infectious and the commitment and love he has for his teammates and the game of basketball makes practice and games enjoyable for everyone involved. Lewis鈥檚 hard work, selflessness, and dedication are a great example for the kids in our program. I am proud of you, Lewis, and keep up the great work!” -Coach Xavier Castellano

COSTA MESA HIGH SCHOOL

Kyra Kirsch – Junior, Soccer;聽 GPA: 4.0

“Kyra plays midfield and is starter on the CMHS Varsity Soccer team. Kyra is an excellent leader on the field. She is loved and respected by everyone.聽 The younger players look up to her. Kyra is a genuine person with a big heart.” – Coach Jason Boyce

“Kyra is tenacious on the field and has a hard work ethic both in the classroom and on the field. She leads by example and is a true leader on the field.” – Athletic Director Sharon Uhl

Nathen Rocha – Sophomore, Soccer; GPA: 3.0

“Nathen may only be a sophomore, but he already shows great leadership on the field.聽 He is one of the captains because he leads by example with his hard work ethic.聽 Nathen has stepped it up in the classroom to become a scholar-athlete with a 3.0 GPA. He is a student first at all times, and this year, his hard work ethic on the field transferred into the classroom as well. We are very fortunate to have him on our team and I look forward to coaching him for 2 more years.” – Coach Santy Guzman
