Mediocre Cedarburg Bulldogs season ends in the playoffs
CEDARBURG, Wis. — The Cedarburg High School boys’ varsity football team had a very average season this past year. Their nonconference results gave the team, as well as fans, a sense of hope that this year could be different. However, as the Bulldogs entered into conference play, they quickly lost that hope and the games that went along with it. An average season is once again in the books, as now the Bulldogs will have to sit back and reflect on what they can improve on as they hope for different results come next fall.
The nonconference games started about as perfect as they could have for the Bulldogs, as the offense and defense both flexed their muscles. Their first game came at home against Port Washington. The Bulldogs would dominate this game, winning 31-7, showing that the team was ready for the season. The second and final nonconference game came on the road at Grafton High School. Once again, the Bulldogs would dominate the game winning this one 40-18.
With a now perfect 2-0 record, the bulldogs would enter the next part of their schedule in conference play. This is where things would get difficult for the Bulldogs. Their first conference game would be a road game at Nicolet High School. This game would mark the Bulldogs’ first loss as they would just miss out on victory losing 21-20.
The Bulldogs would get back on track immediately the following week, as they won their most dominant game of the season thus far, defeating West Bend West High School 41-0. This would put the Bulldogs at a comfortable 3-1 record with five regular season games to go. All remaining games would be conference games in which the Bulldogs would have a rollercoaster of results.
Every week the Bulldogs traded wins for losses. They would beat Slinger, Homestead and West Bend. However, they would lose to Hartford and Whitefish Bay. With a record of 6-3, the Bulldogs qualified for the playoffs.
The first round of the playoffs would see the Bulldogs play host to Slinger High School for the second time this season. The first game was all Cedarburg, as they defeated Slinger by putting up a season high 70 points. The rematch however, was not as kind to the Bulldogs. Their offense, who could not stop scoring in the first game, was held to a mere field goal in the second game as they lost 24-3. This marked the end of a disappointing season for Cedarburg as their playoff loss saw them end 6-4.
They will now have to look ahead to next season and hope they can turn things around.
