Wayne Huff: Teaching on and off the baseball field
FLORENCE, Ky. — Boone County High School boys varsity baseball coach Wayne Huff has built quite a program. Over a dozen years as their skipper, Huff has helped put Rebels baseball on the map.
The Rebels have won three Kentucky High School Athletics Association (KHSAA) District 33 titles under his direction. They also bagged back-to-back conference crowns in 2010 and 2011.
In addition, Boone County captured the 2010 Region 9 Championship as Huff earned a Coach of the Year award in recognition of his work that season.
These accolades only begin to illustrate his impact. A number of past Rebels he coached later moved on to play in the NCAA. Three of his former players got selected in the Major League Baseball draft, one of whom pitched a perfect game for the Rebels in 2014.
Huff’s son Justin is currently a senior on the Rebels’ roster. The right-handed hurler and outfielder committed to play for Thomas More University earlier this fall.
Prior to his arrival, Huff cemented his name as a top hardball coach in Northern Kentucky. He managed the Silver Grove High School squad from 2002 to 2008. Huff’s teams topped the all-time mark twice for season wins at Silver Grove.
Following his tenure, he migrated west and took charge of the Boone County ball club in 2009.
Huff can be characterized as the consummate coach. Aside from his career as a high school manager, he has been involved with the Bluegrass baseball organization and the Knothole youth league.
What’s more, Huff led the 11-and-under Bluegrass Legends select team. Beyond that, he taught private lessons at the Kentucky Academy of Sports.
Along with his other coaching commitments, Huff took a lead role in Boone County’s annual summer baseball camp. He is now part of Ohio Elite travel ball working with pre-college prospects.
If that isn’t enough, Huff even coached high school tennis before taking control of Boone County baseball.
His program highlights the intangible principles of baseball, some of which include work ethic and hustle. Huff aims for his team to play with passion while having fun in the process.
Besides running the Rebels, Huff is closely tied into Boone County’s academic side. He is a teacher at Boone County as well. Huff teaches social sciences at the school.
As for his own education, Huff attended Northern Kentucky University and Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied history, psychology, secondary education and school counseling.
From all accounts, Huff is just as well-liked in the community as he is respected on the diamond. He’s a rare type of teacher on and off the field.
