The brilliant Hiram Terrier: Kevin Beans Jr.
HIRAM, Ohio — A team is born out of the collective but influenced by an individual. That influencer becomes the leader and helps guide their teammates out of precarious situations to prosperity. To identify such an individual takes many games and, even then, that specific sample size might not be enough to figure who amongst this group of players will step up and lead. But most of the time, the head coach knows who to turn to when a boost is needed. For the Hiram Terriers head coach, Taylor Roth, that player has already been identified as Kevin Beans Jr.
The 6-foot-5 junior is having an outstanding season with the Terriers. He started in eight of the nine games he鈥檚 played in and leads the team in minutes, averaging 28.7 minutes per game. During his time on the court, he leads the team in scoring with 12.3 points per game. Beans Jr. is doing so with some stellar shooting from the field where he鈥檚 averaging 50.6%. That鈥檚 one of every two shots taken that are dropping in. Those are some impressive numbers from someone who is a high-volume shooter.
Beans Jr. carries that encouraging percentage from the field towards the three-point line where he鈥檚 made the most threes (16) and has a three-point percentage of 39.0%. The breadth of his shooting prowess doesn鈥檛 end there as Beans Jr. is also the team leader from the charity stripe where he has an 86.7 free throw percentage. It鈥檚 fair to say that Beans Jr. is the best shooter on the Hiram Terriers and the one Coach Roth will most likely go to for most situational moments.
But Beans Jr. isn鈥檛 a one-dimensional player.
His ability to pass the ball well is evident by his assist totals which stand at 20 for the season. That鈥檚 the second-best assist numbers on the team. His ability to find the open man and, more importantly, knowing when to give up the ball, is a testament to his attitude which prioritizes the team ahead of his own individual numbers. Beans Jr. also expresses his brilliance on the defensive end of the court where he shares the lead in blocks with five and is second in steals with eight.
There鈥檚 no doubt that Beans Jr. is a talented basketball player, given his ability to do almost everything that can be asked. He鈥檚 the best shooter on the team which makes him the best scorer on the team. That notifies the opposition to which he counters their defensive set up by dishing the ball to the open shooter. He has no problem spreading the spotlight and will contribute handsomely on the defensive end. Beans Jr. is a talent that merits the attention.
