Grant Audu having record season at University of British Columbia
VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Grant Audu is a fourth year guard for the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds who is leading his team to one of the best seasons the program has had in recent history.
Audu grew up in Toronto, Canada playing basketball for most of his life. His athleticism has always been what has set his game apart from others for most of his playing days. When he was growing up he was usually the most athletic on his team and later in his life his height began to make him a dangerous player on both ends of the court that opposing teams feared. Due to him sprouting up to 6-foot-4 later in his life he was always a guard and played a position where he had to handle the ball a lot. This has helped him as he now has built those skills to go with his height and elite athleticism.
Coming out of high school he was lightly recruited as he was a skinny kid but he had a lot of potential. He quickly began to make an impact when he stepped on campus for the University of British Columbia, however. Before this current season he was even drafted to play professional basketball in Canada. This marked his first professional experience when the Fraser Valley Bandits of the Canadian Elite Basketball League chose him with one of their selections in the draft. In Canada college basketball players are allowed to play professionally and still have eligibility to be able to continue to compete at the collegiate level.
Audu proved with his time in the Canadian Elite Basketball League that he is one of the most complete players in the entire country. He was able to defend every position from point guards to centers due to his big frame, quickness, and toughness. Audu additionally excelled in every aspect of the game that a coach could want in a player offensively. He has a good handle of the ball, can shoot from deep, get to the rim, and play as a team player.
This all around play from Audu has translated into him being one of the best players in the Canada West Conference as he is averaging a team-high 18.6 points per game so far in his fourth year. His scoring output and efficiency on both ends have helped his team to 12 wins and no losses so far in the conference to take a commanding lead over the other 16 teams. The team is also averaging over 91 points per game which is an insane total for a college basketball team. This team is hard to stop and it all starts with Audu.
This could potentially be the last season for Audu at the University of British Columbia and he has his eyes set on turning pro full-time after the season. Many teams will have their eye on him for the rest of the season but he looks like a legit prospect for many professional teams including the NBA.
