Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets’ Buzz Anthony delivering as promised

ASHLAND, Va. — It’s rare to find a player who fits perfectly well and is productive with the team and system. Usually, players have their own agenda for wanting to join a team, and coaches have theirs while recruiting a player and the two motivations rarely match. They will coincide when it comes to winning but, most of the time, there’s an inherent selfish quality that swirls and directs both player and coach in opposite directions. There’s a false sense of unity that is being held together by the promise of victory. And when winning doesn’t appear, both player and team collapse. There is no such disillusionment and friction when it concerns Buzz Anthony and the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets.

The 5-foot-11 guard knows his role in the team and is executing it perfectly. He started in all nine games and leads the team in minutes with 36.7 per game. Anthony is also the team’s leading scorer with 19.7 and leader in assists with 6.7 per game. Essentially, he’s orchestrating the offense and guiding the team to a winning record. The on-court leadership should come as no surprise since he’s shooting the ball in efficient manner.

Anthony has a field goal percentage of 51.5%. But it’s his three-point shooting which has caught people’s attention, as he’s averaging 45.8% from beyond the arc. He’s also an 80.0% free throw shooter which makes him a quadruple threat when the ball is in his hands. He can drive to the paint, pull up for a mid-range shot, shoot the three or pass the ball to an open teammate. He’s someone who produces a lot and he’s been rewarded for his efforts.

Last season, Anthony received an All-American second team by the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches), a NABC All-South District first team, a D3hoops.com All-South Region first team, an ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) Player of the Year, an All-ODAC first team and a VaSID (Virginia Sports Information Directors) State Player of the Year.

Anthony has achieved a great deal and continues to perform at a high level. His path towards becoming a basketball player could stem from the fact that both his parents were college athletes. His mother, Bee, played volleyball at the University of Maryland. His father, Don, played basketball and tennis at St. Mary’s (Maryland).

There’s no doubt that Anthony is an elite player that will most likely continue to receive awards and accolades should he maintain his current level of form. He’s a player that plays with passion and a determined grit that is innate and will only surface under the right guidance and tutelage. His alignment with the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets is a healthy and fulfilling marriage.
