Mainland鈥檚 Isaiah Gordon is running away from the competition
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Daytona Beach is home to the Daytona 500, Daytona Beach, and Mainland High School, which is home to some of the top athletes in Florida. One of these athletes is a three-sport star by the name of Isaiah Gordon. Whether he鈥檚 playing baseball, competing in track and field, or dodging defenders on the football field, Gordon is a sight to see.聽
While he competes and excels in baseball and track and field, his true love and future lie with football. As a running back for the Mainland High School Buccaneers, Gordon has earned recognition and is a three-star recruit and a top 100 athlete in Florida.聽
As a freshman, Gordon attended Deltona High School where he rushed for over 800 yards and six touchdowns. His performance earned him the honors of second-team All-Area selection by the Daytona Beach News-Journal. His talent was easy to see and he transferred to the larger Mainland High School in Daytona Beach. As a sophomore, he split running duties but still managed to tally 52 carries for 287 yards and four touchdowns.聽
In an effort to get him more playing time his junior season, Gordon made the transition to being a two-way player. On the season he managed 10 tackles including four tackles for loss, a sack, and a fumble recovery. On offense, Gordon went for 185 yards on 25 carries and scored a couple of touchdowns. It wasn鈥檛 until his senior season, 2022 when Gordon really came into his own as a running back.聽
Finally getting a chance to be the starting running back, Gordon carried the ball 118 times for 741 yards and a team-high 15 touchdowns. He also had a receiving touchdown giving him a total of 16 touchdowns on the year. Gordon did well enough to earn a scholarship offer from Marshall University. He also received offers from Eastern Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, Georgia Southern, Furman, and Illinois.聽
Ultimately, Gordon chose Marshall as his college to be. 鈥淥ne of the most influential details in making my decision was where Coach Huff has come from and what he can do for me, as well as what I can do for him and his program,鈥� . 鈥淪eeing where Coach (Charles) Huff has come from and the connections he has really opened their eyes to a lot of things.鈥澛�
Gordon went on to say that he was especially drawn to the spirit of camaraderie among the coaches and players. He鈥檚 so determined to make his way to Marshall that he doesn鈥檛 even care where he plays. He鈥檚 being recruited as a running back, however, and anticipates that to be his position of play.聽
Gordon鈥檚 a big guy at 6-foot and 214 pounds and is a powerful downhill runner who excels in short-yardage and goal-line situations. His size, speed, and determination make Gordon a running force to be reckoned with.聽
