Colorado State鈥檚 women鈥檚 basketball team off to a hot start
FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Colorado State University鈥檚 women鈥檚 basketball team is flipping the script and starting this season with the pedal on the gas.
The Rams began this season after their disappointing loss in the opening round of the playoffs last year, but ever since their first tip off, they have been practically unstoppable. They currently hold an 8-1 record on the season.
This past weekend, the Rams breezed through the Arizona State Classic, leaving the tournament undefeated. Colorado State defeated Harvard on Saturday 59-52 and then Utsa on Sunday 52-48. They opened this season winning six straight, and their only loss this season came against a nationally ranked team. No. 10 Louisville was able to sneak out a victory on the night of the Colorado State鈥檚 fans White Out Night by a 16 point margin, 71-56.
With help from McKenna Hofschild and Karly Murphy, the Rams have been able to outscore their opponents by an average of 10 points per game. On paper, this team shoots the basketball better. They make more of the shots they take than their opponents, but they also get to shoot more as a result of their ability to steal the ball. They already have recovered over 100 turnovers in eight games compared to the 76 they have coughed up.
The Rams struggle solely on the boards, but that has not prevented them from dominating early on this season. Hofschild and Murphy both average more than 12 points per game, and between the two of them account for almost 50 of the team鈥檚 assists. Other notable stars on the squad include Upe Atosu and Kendyll Kinzer. Atosu averages 11.4 points per game and Kinzer acts as a catalyst for the offense with her 23 assists which is second on the team.
The Rams will look to keep the momentum going this Wednesday as they play host to Weber State with tip off scheduled for 6 p.m. Colorado State will play two more non-conference games before beginning conference play.
The Rams participate in the Mountain West Conference, which saw Wyoming come home with the title last season. Conference play for the Rams will begin against the very opponent that ended their season just this past March. Their matchup with Boise State is set for Dec. 28 at home.
