Byron Nelson Bobcats’ great season falls short

TROPHY CLUB, Texas — The Byron Nelson Bobcats football team has a lot to be proud of this season. They managed to rack up multiple playoff wins and gave one of the best teams in the state a run for their money. The Bobcats will feel disappointed their season came to an end prematurely, but the games along the way showed a lot of promise for the future.

The Bobcats started off their season very strong with three straight wins. All of these wins came outside of district play but gave the team a lot of confidence. The first win of the season may have been the most important as they went on the road and knocked off Plano High School 28-22, a close win that would spark the Bobcats to go onto defeat Grapevine and MacArthur High School in their next two games.

Following the win over MacArthur, things got rough for Byron Nelson. They would lose their next non-region game to Boyd High School 28-26, a close loss where the team fought hard but just could not get the job done. Following that loss came another one, this time at the hands of one of the best, if not the best, teams in Texas, Southlake Carrol High School. The Dragons would embarrass the Bobcats on the day by a final score of 69-0. Having been crushed by the Dragons in their opening game of region play, the Bobcats would also lose their next region game to V.R. Eaton High School, 45-10.

With spirits low after a 3-3 start to the season and a schedule full of district games still waiting, the Bobcats finally flipped a switch and turned their season around. In their next four district games, Byron Nelson would outscore their opponents 174-107, winning all four games. This would leave the Bobcats with a record of 7-4 and give them a shot at the state playoffs.

The playoffs would get off to a flying start for Byron Nelson, as they would go on the road and defeat Weatherford High School 35-14 in their first round matchup. The offense would continue to roll in the Bobcats’ second round matchup as they would dominate Eastlake 63-14.

The next game of the playoffs would unfortunately be the last for the Bobcats as they ran into Denton Guyer High School, a powerhouse program with only one loss on the season. The Bobcats would battle well in a game which was expected to be very one sided before ultimately falling 43-36.

In what was a season of ups and downs for the Bobcats, they proved that they can compete at the highest level. Going into next season, they will have to build off of that momentum their playoff run gave them this year and potentially make it all the way to AT&T Stadium next season for a shot at the state title.
