Brad Roberts sets rushing record as he pursues life in the U.S. Air Force
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — This season has been historic for Air Force fullback Brad Roberts as he has cemented himself into the history books.
Roberts needed just 1,074 rushing yards to set the single season record for an Air Force fullback. Roberts passed that mark with two games remaining on the Air Force schedule and continues to climb up other records for the school as his career goes on. Born and raised in Colorado in a small town on the outskirts of Denver, Roberts grew up with dreams of playing football for the Air Force when he was playing in high school in Arvada.
For Roberts, playing for the Air Force Academy was much more than just football. It was about being in the United States Air Force after school which he is on his way to accomplishing. Roberts had a handful of other offers from Ivy League schools including Cornell and Columbia, as well as in-state college Northern Colorado, but he ultimately decided he wanted to go the Air Force route.
It has definitely paid off for him so far and he was happy to see his name in the record books.
鈥淚t鈥檚 cool to see, but honestly I care about the wins more than the stats,鈥 Roberts .
The wins have come with the stats for Roberts and the Air Force Academy as they boast a record that has nine wins and only three losses on the year. That is good enough to earn them a trip to a bowl game come late December.
For Roberts and the Air Force football program, the fullback is a featured part of their offense, making him the go-to ball carrier for the team. They run a triple-option style offense which gives the quarterback the option to hand it off to the fullback on almost every play, which is how Roberts tallied up 279 rushing attempts so far in the year.
Roberts had a breakout year this year. In last season鈥檚 campaign, he only played in four games due to pandemic protocols that only allowed Air Force to play so many games.
Air Force features a dangerous running attack and when it isn鈥檛 Roberts getting all the yards, touchdowns and glory, it is someone else: typically senior Warren Bryan. Roberts is a stand-up teammate and cheers on his teammates when it鈥檚 not him making the plays out there.
鈥淵ou see it all the time in practice,鈥 Roberts . 鈥(Bryan鈥檚) speed is just awesome to watch.鈥
Roberts has earned the title of the most rushing yards in a season for a fullback at Air Force, but he is also working his way up the list of most rushing yards in a season at Air Force, regardless of position. He is currently sitting in sixth on the list with one game to go on the season. Roberts has been a key part of this team for Air Force and still has another year coming next season to improve on his college football career. Keep an eye out for Roberts and Air Force for at least the next year to come.
