The reliable UNI Panthers guard: Trae Berhow
CEDAR FALLS, IowaÌý— Coaches and fans have expectations when it concerns the players on their roster. And in all instances, they want to witness their athletes surpass those expectations. It’s how greatness is measured. But being the best isn’t necessarily a singularity. It can shape into many forms. While it’s often the case that players with the loud stat lines take the spotlight, it’s those with the consistent performances, that may or may not have the huge numbers, are also showered in praise. For the University of Northern Iowa Panthers, they have a player in Trae Berhow that merits a distinction.Ìý
The 6-foot-5 guard is having a phenomenal start to the season. He’s the Panthers’ second-leading scorer with 10.8 points per game and also second in terms of minutes per game averaging 30.8. While those numbers define him as the number two on the roster, he does challenge that label by being the best rebounder on the team. Trae Berhow has the most total rebounds on the team with 22 while 21 were defensive rebounds. To put things into a perspective, he’s a guard who’s managing to collect more defensive rebounds than the tallest, widest, and strongest players on the team. It’s a credit to his on-court maturity and his overall experience as a college basketball player. Berhow’s efforts should come as now surprise given his performances last season.Ìý
In the 2020-21 campaign, Trae Berhow played in 22 games and started in 20 of them where he averaged 13.0 points per game. He hauled in 108 rebounds, averaging 4.9 rebounds per game and had the most assists on the team with 67. What separates Berhow from last season to this one is his shooting efficiency. In the 2020-21 season, he shot 38.7 percent from the field and 33.6 percent from the three point arc. Whereas this season His field goal percentage is at 42.4 percent and he’s shooting 48.0 percent from the three-point line. Those are remarkable improvements which only lends credibility to the fact that Trae Berhow has experienced an evolution in his game.Ìý
He’s shooting the ball better. He’s got a good sense of rebounding placement which is enabling him to be the leading rebounder on a team, despite being a guard. While he’s not the leading scorer on the team, there is a strong case to be made that he is the best player on this UNI Panthers roster. Not only does he possess the physical attributes but he has the mental acuity which can only lift his team to greater heights. Trae Berhow is reliable and should be in the hunt for a numbers of personal and team accolades this season.Ìý
