November spotlights: Costa Mesa and Estancia HS scholar-athletes

COSTA MESA, Calif. 鈥 Each month, the Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa recognizes and honors exceptional Scholar-Athletes from Estancia High School and Costa Mesa High School. The award recipients are not only leaders on the field, court, or pool, but also in the classroom.

On November 18, 2021, these stellar Scholar-Athletes were honored in a special Kiwanis award ceremony.

ESTANCIA HIGH SCHOOL

  • Tara Schroeder – Senior, Tennis; GPA: 鈥淎s one of our team captains, Tara was not only our most important player but our leader, and she exemplifies what an Estancia athlete can and should be. She will be sorely missed.” – Coach Mike Moorewood
  • Trevor Thomas – Senior, Football; GPA: 3.5: “Trevor is a senior wide receiver who leaves four years of dedication and hard-work on and off the football field. Trevor displayed great leadership and athletic prowess while playing on this year鈥檚 football team, that made it to the post-season. Trevor embodies all the qualities we expect at Estancia such as dedication, commitment, loyalty, and grit. Trevor maintained a 3.5 G.P.A. while participating in football and track. Trevor is considering schools such as University of Colorado, La Verne, CSULB, and CS Fullerton to further his education and perhaps play football, if the opportunity allows itself. Congrats Trevor!” – Coach Mike Bargas

COSTA MESA HIGH SCHOOL

  • Daisy Carrillo – Senior, Cross Country;聽 GPA: 3.5: “Daisy is the team captain and achieved All League Honors for the second time. She also lead her team to the CIF Finals this year. She was a member of the 2019 State Cross Country Team. Daisy is a multi-sport athlete as she also competes in Track and Soccer. Daisy is a great leader amongst her peers and a great example of the 6 Pillars of Character! She is looking to continue her athletic and academic career at a University to be decided. Her personal favorite quote is 鈥淚f it doesn鈥檛 challenge you, it won鈥檛 change you.鈥 (Fred Devito)” – Coach Steve Moreno

    Edward Rodriguez – Senior, Cross Country; GPA: 3.0: “Edward is a team captain and placed first at the prestigious Woodbridge Invitational this year. He also has achieved All League Honors for the second time, and lead the team to CIF Finals this year. Edward is a great leader and well respected by his teammates. He is looking to continue his athletic and academic career at a Junior College and then transferring to a 4 year University. He is a great human being and I know he’ll be successful wherever he goes.” -Coach Steve Moreno
