Hayden Vinyard lights up 2021 season
VALPARAISO, Ind. –聽Hayden Vinyard, senior running back for the Valparaiso High School Varsity Football Team, posted more than 2,000 total rushing yards in a dominant 2021 season by the Vikings.聽
Vinyard鈥檚 consistency and individual performances on the field come as no surprise to the Valparaiso faithful, as the star running back has made significant offensive contributions throughout his high school career.聽
Vinyard originally began playing for Valparaiso during the 2019 season, rushing for 743 yards to go along with seven rushing touchdowns. It was a season in which the Vikings dominated league opponents, finishing first place in the Duneland Conference. However, they would ultimately lose to New Palestine in the 5A State Championship game that year.聽
During the 2020 season, Valparaiso had perhaps the best running back tandem in all of high school football in Indiana. Vinyard, along with senior Tommy Burbee, were both incredibly explosive for the Vikings, with each of them racking up massive numbers.
Valparaiso would finish the 2020 season with a stellar 8-1 record, their only loss coming against Zionsville in the Semi-State Championship game.聽
Vinyard took full control of Valparaiso鈥檚 offensive scheme in 2021, producing several dominant performances that single-handedly won multiple games for the Vikings.聽
In a matchup against Crown Point, Vinyard exploded for 246 rushing yards with three touchdowns on the ground. Valparaiso won the game in blowout fashion, racking up 543 total yards of offense with eight touchdowns.聽
Vinyard would keep that momentum going for the rest of the season, churning out multiple performances with over 100 yards on the ground.聽
The senior running back was incredibly efficient in a 49-7 victory over Lake Central, finishing the game with 149 rushing yards and four touchdowns on only 12 carries. The very next week, Vinyard delivered another stellar performance, rushing for 247 yards and two touchdowns against Hammond Central.聽
Vinyard and the Vikings parlayed their regular success to a postseason run that ultimately ended against Michigan City in the Regional Championship game. The Wolves were able to neutralize Valparaiso鈥檚 ground game, limiting Vinyard to 57 yards on 18 carries.聽
Despite falling short of postseason expectations this season, Vinyard was phenomenal at the running back position for the Vikings. He helped lead his team to a 10-2 finish, racking up 2053 rushing yards with 26 touchdowns on the ground. He averaged 8.3 yards per rush, 171.1 rushing yards per game, and also caught two receiving touchdowns in 2021.聽
