Daylen Kountz is making every moment on the court count

GREELEY, Colo. — Senior Daylen Kountz is leading the charge for the University of North Colorado men’s Basketball squad.

A veteran guard, Kountz has been lighting up the court from wherever his shot is released. He currently sits in third place in the Big Sky Conference in scoring with 18.1 points per game. In terms of overall points scored however, Kountz has sole possession of first place. His effort is closed to unmatched totaling 269 minutes played which is the third most in the league.

His variety of shot selection has directly contributed to the Bears early success. He鈥檚 12-for-34 from behind the three-point line and sits just below 0.500 in field goal percentage. He is not just an offensive threat though, his defense is almost as good as his offense.

Kountz currently has 12 steals, which is tied for best. His impact defensively is huge considering the Bears have struggled to maintain possession all game without coughing up unnecessary turnovers. Throughout their eight games played, opponents have successfully stolen the ball 55 times against the Bears. Kountz鈥檚 steals from opponent鈥檚 account for almost half of his own team’s overall total of steals.

Another standout statistic is Kountz鈥檚 rebound totals. He has 33 so far on the season, but 28 of those have come defensively. He also broke his career high in rebounds earlier this year on Nov. 13 after snagging 9 against Hawaii Hilo. He is also an excellent free throw shooter making 19 of his 26 taken all season.

The Denver native has spent his entire collegiate career playing in the state of Colorado but did not join the Bears until his junior year. Before that, Kountz was a Buffalo at the University of Colorado for his freshman and sophomore years. Now a senior, Kountz is making the most of his chance to shine as a member of the Bears basketball team.

The University of North Colorado Bears will look to snap their four-game losing streak this upcoming week. They tip off against Montana State at home for their first Big Sky Conference matchup on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. Mountain time.

The Bears last year fell short of a Big Sky Conference title. They were eliminated from contention in the 2nd round by Southern Utah. They have yet to win a title since having their first Big Sky championship stripped from them in 2011.
