Jaquan Sanders sets sights on future with Seton Hall commitment
BRONX, N.Y. (BVM) — After decommitting from the St. John鈥檚 basketball program back in early October, Our Savior Lutheran point guard Jaquan Sanders found his next home nearly 40 miles away.听
The Class of 2022 point guard made his decision official, to play at Seton Hall on Nov. 11. and enjoyed a breakout season in his junior campaign.
Following his junior year, the 6-foot-3 combo guard received attention from a list of Division I programs across the country, later settling on the Red Storm program. Back in May, Sanders discussed who he had been in contact with.
鈥淭here’s a lot of schools that touched [base with] me after the season was over,鈥� Sanders said. 鈥淧eople came back for another fifth year. They鈥檝e been telling me like, 鈥榳e鈥檙e still on you鈥� and they were telling me they would like me for their program. Schools that have been having me [include] Lasalle, Xavier, St. Johns, Pittsburgh. There鈥檚 a lot of schools hitting me. Holy Cross hit me, Creighton, UCLA, the recruitment鈥檚 been good.鈥�
Sanders had turned heads during The Grind Session, an elite prep basketball circuit that hosted competition in a 鈥榖ubble鈥� this past season. The OSL guard averaged 19 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals听 while shooting 39 percent from 3-point range for the Falcons in their 28-game season.听
The Bronx native told that his best friend was killed near his home in Far Rockaway, Queens, leading him to want to leave his hometown for college.
鈥淚 picked Seton Hall because they [have] always been recruiting me since freshman year so after I decommitted from St. John鈥檚 they [were] the first school to call after I decommitted and they always showed love to me and my family,鈥� . 鈥淎lso I wanted to be away from home but not so far. [Now] my family can still be close and come to the games so that鈥檚 why I picked Seton Hall as my new home.鈥�
Sanders will join three-star guard JaQuan Harris and three-star big man Percy Daniels in Seton Hall鈥檚 2022 recruiting class. With the OSL guard鈥檚 announcement, the Pirates now boast the 40th–ranked class nationally.
Seton Hall will be getting a lethal shooter in Sanders, with OSL head coach Pete Wehye detailing the guard as one of the premier outside shot-makers he has seen in New York City.
鈥淚 tell everybody he has an old man game,鈥� Wehye said. 鈥淵eah he can dunk the ball, but it鈥檚 not his athleticism. He鈥檚 able to pass, he鈥檚 able to handle and everybody knows his jumpshot is the most lethal thing, probably in the city 鈥� he has the ultimate green light from me.鈥�听
With his senior season underway, Sanders will look to build on his game before heading down to play under coach Kevin Willard.
