ROCHESTER, Mich. — When the new season is swiftly approaching, fans are often enthused about the roster construction. There鈥檚 a giddiness amongst the supporters regarding the returning athletes but more so with those have freshly joined. It鈥檚 the anticipation from the prospects that has people excited. A sort of nervous delight that those budding young athletes could breakthrough in their first season and display moments that will live long in the memory banks. It just so happens that the Oakland Golden Grizzlies have found their star cub in Trey Townsend.
The 6-foot-6 forward has already captured the hearts of the loyal Golden Grizzlies fanbase with his remarkable debut season. He started in all of the 30 games and averaged 8.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.4 steal and a team-leading 0.8 blocks per game. Those numbers earned him a spot in the Horizon League All-Freshman Team. In fact, he was one of only three players in the conference to win the Horizon League freshman of the Week on multiple occasions.
Those achievements were merited based on his performances at Purdue Fort Wayne where he scored a career-high 19 points and also against UIC where he tallied 17 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals. It鈥檚 Trey Townsend鈥檚 explosiveness on both ends of the court that make him to be a veritable showpiece on this Golden Grizzlies team. Not only will he find the means to score, in which he reached double figures in 11 games, but he will also ensure that the opposition fears facing him during their attempts. This seasons is no different.
Trey Townsend has so far played in two games an already has four steals and two blocks to go along with his 12.0 points per game. He鈥檚 also improved his shooting. Last year he managed a 52.4 field goal percentage while this year he鈥檚 averaging 55.6. A small increase but, nevertheless, a significant one. While he doesn鈥檛 take that many three-pointers he still improved his numbers jumping from 33.3 to 42.9 from beyond the arc. However, his free throw shooting is among the team鈥檚 worst.
That鈥檚 perfectly all right since he is still a young man who has proven that he鈥檚 willing and able to develop his game. Trey Townsend offers an injection of excitement needed in this roster and, with time, he will most certainly develop into one of the best recruit this Oakland University men鈥檚 basketball program has ever witnessed. The hype is legitimate and so is the player. Without a doubt, Trey Townsend has a bright future ahead of him. One that will give the fans goosebumps.
