The close-knit Bigfork Vikings football team

BIGFORK, Mont. — The upscale resort village of Bigfork in Flathead, Montana, is one of the great towns in the West. Located in Montana鈥檚 Rocky Mountains, the community is home to over 4,000 people. The area is actually a fork where the Flathead River and the Swan River flow into Flathead Lake.聽Bigfork is known for its many tourist activities, including golfing, art galleries, hiking, film festivals and more.

However, this is not all the charming community of Bigfork is known for. Sports is a major part of the Bigfork community and an excellent way for the people living there to keep fit. Some of the different tournaments people get involved with include basketball, golf, cricket, soccer, volleyball, football and others held within and around the community.

Most of the competitive sports are incorporated into the extracurricular activities of the Bigfork High School. The school is the home of one of the most popular sports teams in the area: the Bigfork Vikings football club.

Football means a lot in the beautiful town of Bigfork, and, unlike most teams in the other cities, the Bigfork Vikings were fortunate enough to play despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

They played host to the Wolves. The seniors were particularly grateful for this opportunity to play their last game before graduating from high school. However, they put measures like masks on the sidelines and sanitization in place to ensure the game went on despite the pandemic.

Many Bigfork High School football players moved on to play football at higher levels. Josh Sandry, for example, signed with Montana in 2015 on a full-ride scholarship. Isaac Bjorge also got an offer from MSU Northern.

Sadly, tragedy befell the Bigfork Vikings football team this season when they suddenly lost a teammate. Dane Hansen, 16, was very active, athletic and loved football dearly, a passion he shared with his father. The Kalispell-born footballer was highly competitive and dreamt of playing both in college and the NFL.

Although it is difficult to move past such a loss, the football team, led by head coach Jim Benn, entered this season well-motivated and as united as ever.

鈥淲e are not necessarily the biggest on the stat sheet,鈥 senior lineman Braeden Guse . 鈥淲e just play together with a heart that is unmatched.鈥

The Bigfork Vikings got their first loss for the 2021-22 season after a match with the Eureka Lions. The 14-13 loss was a close call for the Vikings. Although Bigfork鈥檚 defense has been unmatched so far, the Lions played a heavy run game that even senior lineman Guse found quite challenging to control.

After going 9-2 in the regular season, the Bigfork Vikings are ready to take their revenge against the Eureka Lions at the Class B semifinals. The football club beat Townsend Bulldogs 20-15 in the quarterfinals to qualify for this semifinal match.

The Bigfork Vikings are a close-knit team that continues to make the community proud. Their passion on the field is second to none. Considering themselves as a family, they continue to support each other on and off the field.
