Cam Moore aims to lead Lions to title
HARRISBURG, Pa. – Cam Moore and his teammates on the Penn State Harrisburg hockey team are always pursuing the early momentum. Once the Lions get things moving in their direction, they are difficult to stop. In a recent 9-8 loss to Alvernia, Penn State Harrisburg shows even when it doesn鈥檛 win, the Lions games are never boring.
Penn State Harrisburg, which competes at the Division III club hockey level as part of the Delaware Valley College Hockey Conference, is off to a 5-2-2 start and is second place in the Tournament Bound West Division.
In the loss to Alvernia, Moore scored twice in the first period and added another in the second for a hat trick.
鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely important for us to get off to fast starts,鈥� Moore said. 鈥淗ockey is a game of momentum, and with the talent our team has I think we are pretty tough to beat when we come out playing fast and aggressive. It鈥檚 really important to be able to play a full 60 minutes and not give teams a chance to creep back into the game.鈥�
Penn State Harrisburg is the second-high scoring team in the league, sitting behind Delaware which has 87 total goals, with 81 goals.
Moore leads the league with 36 points, including 22 goals and 14 assists. Tommy Olson also has 26 points for the Lions, recording 11 goals and 26 assists. Moore said while attacking is vital for Penn State Harrisburg, he鈥檚 seen his role expand beyond scoring.
鈥淢y role has certainly changed a bit, but mostly on the defensive side of things,鈥� said Moore, who graduated from Cedar Cliff High School. 鈥淚鈥檝e had to pick up a much more responsible role on defense, especially in getting more time on the penalty kill. It is still a part of my game that could use more improvement, but it has certainly gotten better with the guidance of great coaches and teammates.鈥�
The Lions will have plenty of time to improve, as their season will stretch until the DVCHC playoffs start Feb. 25.
鈥淚 think our biggest challenge is just staying focused on our goals,鈥� Moore said. 鈥淲e have aspirations to compete for a league championship, and also make an appearance at the national tournament. It鈥檚 a long season, so making sure we鈥檙e staying in shape and not losing focus on the end goal is most important, especially with a month or so off over winter break.鈥�
